Our School Direct Non-Salaried Package
The exciting School Direct training course at Whitley and Eggborough Community Primary School will result in the attainment of a PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate in Education) from Leeds Metropolitan University. The PGCE also involves three masters credit modules which will be led by the University staff. Students will attend the University one day per week and the remainder of each week will be spent in school, obtaining experience in an educational setting.
Students will spend Tuesday to Friday in school, gaining experience in all year groups and key stages, working alongside and learning from outstanding practitioners. A block teaching practise of half a term will also be spent in the student’s non-preferred key stage at a University approved partner primary school.
In addition to the training provided by the University, the students will also attend sessions arranged by the school, either in school or venues within the area. Training will include:
- Teaching phonics
- Teaching grammar
- Implementing and teaching an innovative curriculum
- Monitoring, assessment and target setting
- Moderation and the levelling of written work
- Planning and delivering assemblies
All teaching staff within the school have undergone mentor training from Leeds Metropolitan University. A trained mentor will be assigned to each trainee to provide support and guidance and to carry out lesson observations and assessment against the teaching standards.
The Interview Process
Successful applicants will be invited to an interview. The interview day will include: a guided tour of the school led by two Year 6 pupils, a written task, a lesson observation, an opportunity for an informal chat with current School Direct students and a school lunch with staff and children. Those candidates who are successful in gaining a place will receive confirmation direct from Leeds Metropolitan University.
Successful candidates will be welcome to spend time in school during the Spring and Summer terms to familiarise themselves with the children, staff and school.
Successful candidates must pass the skills tests in both Maths and English prior to beginning the School Direct training in September. Support in passing the skills tests will be provided if this is required.
This is a very exciting opportunity for applicants and for the school and we look forward to receiving your application.
