 Cherry – Spring 2 Learning Overview

This half term, children in Cherry class will enjoy a rich and exciting curriculum that encourages curiosity, creativity and teamwork across a range of subjects.

📚 Reading & English

Children will explore a variety of high-quality texts including traditional tales, rhyming stories and books that celebrate diversity and role models. Reading lessons focus on comprehension, discussion and enjoyment of stories.
Writing activities will give children opportunities to write for real purposes, linked to what they are learning across the curriculum.

🔢 Maths

Maths learning follows age-appropriate plans for Year 1 and Year 2, building confidence with:

  • Number, calculation and problem solving

  • Reasoning and explaining thinking

  • Practical resources and visual models

🕰 History – Mary Anning

Children will learn about Mary Anning, a significant historical figure, through:

  • Fossil hunts and practical activities

  • Exploring the past and present

  • Sequencing events and using timelines
    This helps children understand how people from the past have shaped our world.

🔬 Science – Changing Materials

Children will investigate everyday materials by:

  • Exploring how materials bend, stretch, squash and twist

  • Testing and comparing materials

  • Designing and evaluating simple models (such as boats)
    They will learn to ask questions, make predictions and talk about their findings.

✝️ RE – Easter

Children will explore why Easter is important to Christians, learning about:

  • The Easter story and Holy Week

  • Feelings such as sadness, hope and joy

  • How Easter is celebrated today

🎨 Art & Design Technology

In DT, children will design and build moving windmills, learning how to:

  • Make structures stable

  • Use tools safely

  • Evaluate and improve their work
    Art lessons encourage creativity, design and problem-solving.

🧠 PSHE – Healthy Me

Children will learn how to look after themselves by exploring:

  • Healthy choices, food and exercise

  • Hygiene and staying safe

  • Managing feelings and worries

🏃 Physical Education

PE lessons will focus on:

  • Gymnastics – balance, movement and control

  • Multi-sports – teamwork, throwing, catching and games
    Children will develop confidence, coordination and resilience.

💻 Computing & 🎵 Music

  • Computing includes programming using Bee-Bots (Year 1) and Scratch Jr (Year 2)

  • Music lessons explore rhythm, call-and-response and performing together

Spring Term 1 Curriculum Overview

Year B – Pine, Elm & Cherry Classes
Length of term: 6 weeks

This half term, children will enjoy a broad and engaging curriculum with a strong focus on weather, materials, creativity and teamwork.


📚 Reading & Story Time

Children will share a range of high-quality books to support learning, wellbeing and enjoyment of reading, including:

  • Meet the Weather

  • The Koala Who Could

  • The Snail and the Whale

  • The Girl Who Planted Trees

  • The Pea and the Princess

  • Splash!


✏️ English & Writing

  • Daily phonics and reading sessions (including Read Write Inc. where appropriate)

  • Regular writing linked to stories and topics

  • Children will write for different purposes such as stories, labels and explanations


🔢 Maths

  • Daily maths lessons using the White Rose Maths approach

  • Learning is matched to each year group and focuses on number, calculation and problem-solving


🌍 Geography – Weather

Children will:

  • Learn about different types of weather and the four seasons

  • Measure temperature, rainfall and wind direction

  • Keep simple weather diaries

  • Use equipment such as thermometers, rain gauges and weather vanes


🔬 Science – Changing Materials

Children will:

  • Identify everyday materials such as wood, plastic, metal and glass

  • Explore material properties (hard, soft, bendy, waterproof)

  • Carry out simple investigations

  • Design and test objects, including boats and parachutes


🎨 Art & Design Technology

Children will:

  • Design and create superhero sculptures

  • Use materials such as wire, clay, paint and collage

  • Learn about colour, texture, shape and form

  • Work together on large collaborative artwork


🎵 Music – Sound Patterns

Children will:

  • Use voices and instruments to create sound effects

  • Explore loud, quiet and silent sounds

  • Perform rhythms linked to stories and fairytales

  • Take part in simple group performances


💻 Computing

  • Year 1: Creating lists, drawing rockets and sequencing instructions

  • Year 2: Typing, word processing, adding images and creating digital documents

  • All children will learn about online safety


🧠 PSHE – Dreams and Goals

Children will:

  • Set goals and talk about their strengths

  • Learn how to persevere when learning is challenging

  • Work cooperatively and celebrate achievements

  • Build confidence and resilience


🏃 Physical Education (PE)

Children will take part in:

  • Cooperation games – teamwork, sharing and communication

  • Target games – throwing, kicking, aiming and control

  • Activities are adapted for different age groups


✝️ Religious Education (RE) – Islam

Children will:

  • Learn about the Prophet Muhammad
